Active immunization of sensitive animals with MBP plus adjuvant or adoptive transfer of MBP specific CD4 + T cells can trigger EAE. However, direct injection of MBP sensitized T lymphocytes into the CNS of experimental animals could not induce EAE, but subcutaneous or peripheral injection of the same number of MBP sensitized T lymphocytes could cause EAE, suggesting that it is an important factor in pathogenesis to activate peripheral lymphocytes against MBP and cross the blood-brain barrier after activation.
